Gas to heat pump hot water conversions

Before and after: an old gas hot water unit replaced by Sureflow
Before and after: an old gas hot water unit replaced by Sureflow

More Perth households are moving their hot water off gas, especially once they've got rooftop solar. A heat pump lets you heat water with electricity, ideally your own, instead of paying for gas and a gas supply charge.

Because we hold both a plumbing licence and a gas fitting licence, the gas side and the plumbing side are handled by the same team in one visit. No waiting on a second trade to come back and cap the gas line.

What a conversion involves

  • Safe disconnection of the gas hot water unit and capping of the gas line by a licensed gas fitter
  • Removal of the old unit from the property
  • A base, drainage and clearances set up for the heat pump
  • Water connections with new tempering and relief valves
  • A power supply to the new unit, with a licensed electrician arranged by us where one is needed
  • Commissioning, testing and setting the timer to suit your household

A conversion usually takes longer than a straight swap, up to a full day, mostly because of the power supply. We'll tell you exactly what's needed when we quote.

Is it worth it?

It depends on how your household uses hot water, what your gas is costing you, and whether you've got solar. A gas unit is cheaper to buy, but a heat pump can be cheaper to run, especially if it's running off your own panels in the middle of the day. If you still have other gas appliances, like a cooktop or heater, you'll keep the gas supply charge, which changes the maths.

Our heat pump vs gas guide lays out the trade-offs, and we'll give you an honest view on site.

Questions

Who disconnects the gas?

Our licensed gas fitters disconnect the old unit and cap the gas line safely, in the same visit as the heat pump install.

Will I still pay a gas supply charge?

Only if you keep other gas appliances, like a cooktop or heater. If hot water was your only gas appliance, you can talk to your gas retailer about closing the account.
